On the afternoon of December 17, personnel from United Communities Volunteer Fire Department and Queen Anne’s County Emergency Medical Services were sent to the Sparrow residence on Olive Branch Road for an unknown medical problem. Victoria Sparrow’s 18-year-old son called 911 after he found his mother walking around their home, disoriented. Emergency responders began treating Mrs. Sparrow and then found 3-year-old Laci Sparrow unconscious in a bedroom. They tried to resuscitate the child, who was taken by ambulance to Anne Arundel Medical Center and pronounced dead a short time later.
The State Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Laci M. Sparrow’s death was a homicide caused by medical intoxication, according to a news release from the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office. Victoria M. Sparrow, 43, of Stevensville was charged on December 30 with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter. Sparrow is being held without bond in the Queen Anne’s County Detention Center in Centreville. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 28 in district court. Sparrow also is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree child abuse causing death, second-degree child abuse, first- and second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.
