The three R’s of living a greener life, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, serve as the foundation for Queen Anne’s County Parks and Recreation’s new after school program called ROO After School. It is offered at both Kent Island and Centreville elementary schools this fall.
“My main passion is to provide a place for children where they can be creative but also environmental,” said Instructor Maureen Fleshman. “I feel like the simplicity of things has been lost.”
ROO (Repurposing Ordinary Objects) teaches children to be creative and eco-conscious by encouraging them to save used materials like shoe boxes, milk jugs and other discarded items and transform them into new creations with new purposes. ROO After School is for children in kindergarten through second grade and costs $20 per student. At Kent Island Elementary School, the class is held Mondays, September 21 – October 26, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Refer to program: 622002 when registering. At Centreville Elementary School the class is held Tuesdays, September 22 – October 27, 2009 from 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Refer to program: 622003 when registering.
