Woman Dies From Injuries Suffered In Centreville School Bus Crash

A Church Hill woman died from injuries she suffered two weeks earlier in a crash involving her car and a school bus on state Route 304 in front of Centreville Middle School. Sylvia Ann Beals, 63, died at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where she had been hospitalized since May 20. On the day of the accident, police issued a traffic citation for failure to grant the right of way to the school bus driver, Curtis E. Benton Jr., 66, of Centreville. The bus was carrying 29 students from Centreville Middle School, Kennard Elementary School and Centreville Elementary School. Seven children, all of them middle school students, were taken by ambulances to two hospitals, where they were treated for minor injuries and released the same day. Curtis Benton is a retired law enforcement officer who served 27 years as a Maryland State Police trooper and 12 years as chief deputy for the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office. He had been a substitute school bus driver for about three years.
