February 2: Be My Valentine Needlepoint Class, ages 18+: Wednesday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Learn the basics and create a needlepoint heart to give to your Valentine. Local artist and Arts Council Board Member, Hallie Rogers Rugg, shares her needlework talents in this class as part of the Centre’s Small Works Fundraiser. February 2 – March 16: Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow! ages 10+: Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. (no class 2/9) This watercolor class centers around wintery scenes. Bring your favorite winter time photos and begin learning how to magically transform them into dreamy watercolors. Prior knowledge of watercolor painting is beneficial but not required. Specific instruction will be given including fun and innovative techniques to give your work that something special. While the weather outside is frightful, join the delightful Sally Clark for a workshop that will warm you up to watercolors. Materials: registered students will receive a supplies list. February 5: My Little Valentine, ages 7-12: Saturday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. This delightful class is for young people and taught by Sally Clark. Students will make a variety of valentines and tissue paper flowers as gifts to give. February 9: Wine Glass Painting, ages 18+: Wednesday, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Paint delicate details on wine glasses. Participants will receive 2 wine glasses to paint and give as a gift or take home to keep. Area artist Jean Hilleary joins us for the first time as an instructor for this fun and informative class. February 19: Second Annual “Small Works: Exhibit & Raffle” Gala Drawing of Winning Tickets. 6-8 p.m. Arts advocate and celebrity host Frances Hughes Glendening will draw winning tickets for each work of art while attendees enjoy refreshments. Winners who are present may take artwork home at the end of the evening. Raffle tickets are $5 per ticket or 7 tickets for $30 and remain on sale through closing of Exhibit. Gala tickets are $40. February 26 – March 5: Photography with Your Digital SLR, ages 16+: Saturday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Annapolis-area, award winning, professional photographer and experienced teacher, Don Dement is back to help students develop skills and gain a better understanding of the use of digital single lens reflex cameras. Learn about camera characteristics, settings, features and operation; lens selection, auto focusing, exposure control, the histogram, filters, WB selections, mode decisions (PASM and RAW/JPG), storage and file-organizing software, support equipment and much more. Interactive discussions, work on problem solving, and a view of all aspects of digital photography in slide presentations and handout notebooks are part of this class. March 1: Poetry Deadline: 15th ANNUAL EASTERN SHORE REGIONAL POETRY CONTEST presented by Caroline, Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot County Arts Councils. March 9 – 30: Driftwood Face Carving, ages 16+: Wednesday 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Innovative wood carver Tom Yates is back, encouraging students through demonstrations and their own works, to learn and explore the fundamentals of carving faces into wood. There are some fundamentals to be followed including proportions, but students will also be instructed on how to let the subject emerge from raw materials. Materials: Dremel or similar power carving tool, wood bits for power tool, at least 4 different bits needed, safety glasses, and a piece of driftwood or chunk of soft wood; (no oak or locust), pine sassafras, cedar, poplar or cherry. March 19: Tribal Bangle Bracelets, ages 14+: Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Make a faux bone, ivory or wood tribal pattern bracelet with easy to use oven baked clay and simple tools. Texture and embellish your work with beads, wire, small shells or stones. Once cured in the oven, bracelets may be sanded, painted with acrylic paint and polished with soft cloth to achieve an antiqued or ancient weathered look. The resulting bracelets are lightweight and beautiful. A terrific class for groups—bring friends and enjoy learning and creating in this versatile medium.
