Bluegrass/Classic Country Heavyweights The Grascals Play the Avalon Theatre – Friday, Jan. 21 at 8pm

Bluegrass has always held a special place amongst Marylanders, especially those on the Eastern Shore. With a solid selection of local favorites to book, such as (the now retired) Bitter Creek, Chester River Runoff, and Tim Finch of the Eastman Sting Band, the Avalon has had no problem filling the historic theatre with fleet-handed guitar, banjo, and mandolin runs.

This Friday, January 21st at 8pm, the Avalon dips into Nashville’s seemingly endless supply of bluegrass and country talent by presenting CMA winners, The Grascals. Already among the most beloved and revered of contemporary bluegrass groups, the band reached new levels of power and confidence with their last two releases, Keep On Walkin'(2008) and The Famous Lefty Flynn’s (2010). Their trademark blend of traditional bluegrass and classic country with more modern elements has been further strengthened and refined by endless touring and the addition of three-time International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Banjo Player of the Year, Kristin Scott Benson.

Of her membership in The Grascals, Benson says, “I’ve been in the business long enough to realize how rare it is to be in such a successful band and I feel blessed that they offered me a chance to be a part of what they’ve already established.”.

Versatile, soulful, and sincere, two-time IBMA Entertainer of the Year winners The Grascals make classic bluegrass entirely relevant in the here and now, without losing sight of the music’s timeless roots. For country superstar and collaborator Dierks Bentley, The Grascals secret is “excellent songwriting, incredible musicianship, and a band tightness that only comes from extensive touring…”.

Their roots can also be traced back to Nashville’s larger musical community, where the band has been able to draw on legends like Bobby Osborne, George Jones, Vince Gill, The Jordanaires, Steve Wariner, Lloyd Green, Paul Craft and others for songs and for performances in the studio, on stage (including multiple guest appearances on the Grand Ole Opry), and for national television appearances.

The Grascals embody a profound grasp of and familiarity with country and bluegrass tradition that made them a natural choice for Dolly Parton to turn to for recording and tour support not long after the group was created in 2004. The group continues to push the envelope and, in 2010, The Grascals joined The Rowdy Friends Tour, traveling far and wide with Hank Williams, Jr., playing before huge crowds, expanding their fan base, and exposing new audiences to the diverse and unique “BluGrascals” sound.
