Celebrate St. Michaels Scheduled for May 29th – 31st, 2010

The historic Heart and Soul of the Chesapeake Bay invites you to a weekend long event in celebration of the quaint town of St Michaels and it’s history. The town has joined together to celebrate our veterans and active duty military during this Memorial Day weekend event, with special offers and discounts throughout our town’s shops, restaurants and Inns to show our support.

Join us as we Celebrate St. Michaels for a fun and festive experience around every corner. During your visit, step into another time, take a leisurely walk through the historic waterfront district, or shop until you drop in our many unique shops, or perhaps take a boat ride and catch a glimpse of what our gorgeous harbor has to offer, enjoy our many restaurants and lastly, relax and kick off your shoes by ending your fun filled day in one of St Michaels many award-winning B & B’s and Inns.

Celebrate St. Michaels through the eyes of our local Artists. The town of St Michaels is excited to showcase twenty “Celebrate St. Michaels” banners displayed along Talbot Street, for the first time in it’s history. The original artwork for the twenty banners were inspired by the town and it’s surroundings and were created by the members of the St. Michaels Art League. There are six banners that were chosen to represent Celebrate St Michaels and are available as posters. The posters and original artwork of all the banners will be available for purchase at many of the shops and galleries.

If you want to know more about “The Town that fooled the British” you can visit the St. Michaels Museum at St. Mary’s Square and take a leisurely walking tour through the historic waterfront district, see the many original and restored houses from the 1800s while you hear historical and colorful facts about the town. You may hear the Fife & Drum Corp playing as they stroll through town or perhaps catch a glimpse of someone in colonial wardrobe during your visit.

Be sure to visit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum located on the picturesque Miles River and St Michaels harbor to learn about the history of the Bay, St. Michaels, and the people who worked and hunted the Bay’s bounty. History is everywhere in St Michaels.

Can’t forget our scenic harbor and the Miles River… Take a tour of the river on the newly renovated and freshly painted cruise ship, The Patriot, or a romantic wine cruise on the classic wooden gaffrigged catboat, Selina II. Or, get from point to point on the Harbor Shuttle. Or, how about trying your hand at oystering on an authentic and functioning Chesapeake Skipjack?

Make sure to come early on Saturday for a visit to the Fresh Farmer’s Market at the newly landscaped and scenic Muskrat Park overlooking the harbor in the center of town, where you can get seasonal organic veggies, beautiful flowers, yummy pastries and much more!

Celebrate our fine Chesapeake Bay cuisine prepared by our local chefs in their wonderful restaurants throughout town. Enjoy one of our many waterfront restaurants and relax to views of the harbor while dining on freshly caught crabs or fish. If you’d rather be in town, our many street-side restaurants offer fabulous food and drink, great people watching and an “everybody knows your name” attitude.

What would a day (or two) in St. Michaels be without visiting the many quaint and unique shops throughout town? From The Mill to The Inn at Perry Cabin, you will soon find out that St Michaels has a shopping reputation. Shopping is one reason why St. Michaels has been named as “one of the top ten Christmas destinations in America”. There are many unique locally owned clothing and jewelry stores, galleries, antique stores, toy stores, home décor and gift shops, candy and ice cream, etc. – you name it! Our storefronts will be spiffed up for the season, decorated with flowers, or just freshly painted in Celebration of our little town and will have specials throughout the weekend.

On the south end of town – at the historic Mill – experience our local wines from the St. Michaels Winery and local brews from Eastern Shore Brewing, as well as unique shops that will keep you coming back. There is usually a party at The Mill on any given Saturday, but during Celebrate St Michaels weekend event, you won’t want to miss stopping by the see what is going on.

The scenic waterfront, and historic charm of St. Michaels will surely touch the “romance” button in your soul. If you haven’t already planned to spend the night, you will want to stay at one of our privately owned B&Bs, waterfront Inns, or at a waterfront resort with an 18 hole golf course.

We are so excited about sharing our town with you. We hope that if you haven’t been here before, that you will come soon and if you have been to St Michaels before, that you will find your way back! Come by land or sea and help us kick off the beginning of a new season and Celebrate St. Michaels!
