Do-it-yourself Eastern Shore Style

Screen Shot 2017-01-24 at 6.12.25 AM     With the abundance of Eastern Shore farmers’ markets and pick-your-own farms, you can find the perfect fruit during any season for this DIY “TOP THIS SWEET TREATS” bar. If showcasing the delicious local fruits we have to offer wasn’t enough, grab a few bottles of a local distilled rum or vodka for the second part of this project, making this truly an Eastern Shore DIY.

Supplies Needed for Strawberries Two Ways
(Quantity based on number of guests; figure three pieces per guest)
Strawberries (or other seasonal fruit), cleaned and dried
Pipettes
Rum or vodka
Chocolate Dip (recipe follows)
Toppings of Your Choice
Serving dishes and platters
Mini-plates and napkins

 

This sweets station comes in two parts, both showcasing whichever fresh, seasonal fruit you select.
For the first part, simply draw the rum or vodka (we chose whipped cream flavored vodka) into the pipette then insert the pipette into the strawberry. Arrange the berries on a serving platter. Guests can then enjoy fresh fruit with a squeeze of vodka.
For the “TOP THIS” part of our DIY project, arrange the following items on your serving table:
-Clean strawberries
-Bowl of chocolate dip (recipe follows) and be sure your bowl of dip is
sitting in a pretty bowl of ice; small serving spoons
-Bowls  with small spoons of assorted toppings, these work really well:
Mini chocolate chips
Toasted Coconut
Toffee Pieces
-Mini plates, napkins and a sign inviting guests to take a strawberry and spoonful of their favorite toppings.
The beautiful part of this project, aside from the ease and inexpensiveness of making it, is that you can make the staging as elaborate or as simple as you like. Consider using your great grandmother’s serving platter to present the strawberries… or the same flowers from your bouquet to decorate the table… no matter how you stage it, it will surely impress your guests.

Chocolate Dip Recipe:
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup heavy whipping cream
8 ounces of cream cheese at room temperature
1 cup powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Melt chocolate in a double boiler or microwave; set aside to cool. Whip heavy cream with a mixer until soft peaks form; set aside. Beat cream cheese and powdered sugar with electric mixer until smooth. Add vanilla and melted chocolate; beat until light and fluffy. Gently fold in whipped cream until thoroughly mixed. Cover and chill until ready to serve.
