On October 23, 2010 at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St Michaels, MD, the Frederick Douglass Honor Society and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum will sponsor Frederick Douglass Day, an event to wholeheartedly celebrate Frederick Douglass. The celebration will include entertainment featuring gospel and choir music from the Union Bethel AME, the Union Baptist Mass Choir and the Gospel Inspirations as well the jazz and blues selections from Sombarkin’, a musical group from Kent County. The Sankofa African Dancers and the band XPD will also be there to excite the audience with their talent and skill. In addition to dance and music, educational activities to teach participants more about the life of Frederick Douglass, the times in which he lived as well as the culture of the Eastern Shore which shaped Frederick Douglass’ early beginnings will be offered through museum’s exhibits, community organizations’ displays, and children’s activities. Certain to be of interest to event visitors will be a genealogy workshop to help participants begin their research into their family trees with an emphasis on Maryland resources. A food bazaar featuring regional food ranging from seafood delicacies to popular children fare of hot dogs, hamburgers and ice cream will surely satisfy all visitors’ appetites. A young “Frederick Douglass” will be present throughout the day, making history come alive through re-enactment and connection to Frederick Douglass to this current time.
