Jen’s Gems and ‘Lil Gems Raise $53,400 for Maryland’s Ronald McDonald House

Jen’s Gems and Jen’s ‘Lil Gems successfully completed a 5k, half-marathon and/or marathon races in Walt Disney World on January 8, 9, and 10 and were awarded medals despite facing frigid temperatures, sleet and snow. The team ran these races in addition to all of the other events they participated in over the past year, in Memory of Claudia Marquess and in Honor of Ethan Frey. Besides their physical accomplishment, the group (33 adults and 8 children) raised $53,400 and presented a check to the staff of Maryland’s Ronald McDonald House during their Pre-Race Party at Epcot Center which was sponsored by McDonald’s. The money the Gems raised will be used to renovate the children’s playroom at the Ronald McDonald House.

Jen’s Gems has raised an astonishing $103,400 in the past 2 years and is dedicated to continuing their journey of raising funds and awareness for Maryland’s One and Only Ronald McDonald House. Coach and Founder, Jen Benson has chosen to run the 2010-2011 season in Memory of Megan McNeal and in Honor of Kenneth Mejia.  Not only will Megan and Kenneth’s story be told at all of their events they participate in this year, but they will also be honored at a Shorebirds game on July 16 when the ceremonial first pitch will be thrown in their Memory and Honor.

Benson also announced that she has added Brittany Powers to the coaching staff.  Brittany is a seasoned marathoner with the heart and desire to see those reach a goal that they thought would be impossible.  The addition of Powers to the coaching staff will enable Jen’s Gems to continue with their rapid growth and success as they already have the support of Under Armour, GU, McDonald’s and Coca-Cola as corporate sponsors who believe in their mission.

Jen’s Gems will be hosting their 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Hog Neck on June 26.  The tournament has a shot gun start at 9am.  The cost is $100 per golfer which includes a goodie bag, breakfast, lunch, drinks and a silent auction.  100% of all proceeds will go directly to Maryland’s Ronald McDonald House.

In addition to the Golf Tournament, Shorebirds Game and numerous community events, the Gems will be hosting their Annual All-You-Can-Eat Crab Feast on Sunday, Oct 3 at Pier Street located in Oxford.
