Local Man In NASCAR Whelen All American Series

During the workday one might spot Mike Watson chugging along at 4 miles per hour on a tractor as he and his crew at Queen Anne’s County Parks and Recreation mow hundreds of acres of parkland and school property daily. But outside of work, Mike’s mode of transportation reaches speeds of over 100 miles per hour.

Denton resident Mike Watson, who partners with Dr. James Lucas DDS, of Centreville, won the 2010 Old Dominion Speedway Street Stock Championship, in Manassas, VA, September 18.

The NASCAR Whelen All American Series consists of about 70 short tracks nationwide and allows entries of all aspiring drivers and teams who meet eligibility requirements to enter.

Dr. Lucas sponsors the car and Watson drives in all of this year’s races. Watson is Park Maintenance Manager for Queen Anne’s County Parks and Recreation, and is a graduate of Frostburg State University. He and Dr. Lucas have partnered in racing for several years, and also won the 2005 Track Champion with the same car. Last year, Dr. Lucas drove and won the 2009 championship.

Next year, however, the team plans on moving up to the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Stock Car series, which promises faster speeds, more expensive cars, and larger cash prizes. The team is looking to add sponsors for next years’ races and anyone interested in becoming part of the team may contact Watson at 410-253-6623.
