At the annual meeting of CASA of Queen Anne’s and Kent Counties, Kathy Sells was elected to a second term as president; Susan Vianna was elected vice president; Jinny Guy was elected treasurer; and Liz Broderick was elected secretary for fiscal year 2011. Each term is for one year. In addition, Joan Lewis and Susan Vianna were reappointed to second three-year terms.
CASA has had a rapid start-up, thanks to strong support in the local community. Several current board members were part of the 25-member steering committee that began meeting in April 2007 to develop a plan of action to form a CASA program and begin an aggressive fundraising effort. In January 2008 the first Board of Directors was established, and in July CASA of Queen Anne’s became operational. A year later the program expanded to include Kent County.
“Fiscal Year 2011 will be a year of growth and transition for CASA,” said Sells. “We are increasing our staff to include a full-time executive director and a second part-time case supervisor so that we are able to serve more children who are in need of assistance from court appointed special advocates.”
The mission of CASA of Queen Anne’s & Kent Counties is to advocate for the best interests of children who are under the protection of the court system because of abuse, neglect or abandonment. CASA provides trained volunteer advocates to make assessments and recommendations to the court, with the goal of securing a safe, permanent home for every child.
