CRA Gets New Executive Director

Heather Forsyth is the new head of the Chester River Association, taking over for outgoing leader Bob Parks. Forsyth has a law degree from UMD and has worked as a legal aid lawyer and public defender, among other things. Forsyth will be just the second executive director of the CRA, which was founded 25 years ago.

New Executive Director Needed

The search is on for a new executive director of the Chester River Association. Bob Parks of Rock Hall, who has been executive director since November 2005, announced he will step down at the end of this year. “It’s time for new ideas,” said Parks, 66. He said the end of the calendar year is the proper time for such a change because it marks the end of CRA’s fiscal year.

Chester River Association Gets New Riverkeeper

The Chester River Association has a new riverkeeper. J. David Foster took over February 1st, replacing Tom Leigh, who became the first riverkeeper for the Miles and Wye River Conservancies. Foster has lived in Chestertown the past dozen years; he spent more than 20 years with the EPA as an advisor and has a background in urban planning.

Chester River Association Asks EPA to Take Over Maryland Pollution Laws

Waterkeepers throughout Maryland have filed a nearly 60-page petition with the EPA. The petition asks the EPA to withdraw Maryland’s ability to administer the Clean Water Act and, instead, take over administration. Maryland. Riverkeepers, including the Chester River Association, believe Maryland has failed in its effort to keep pollution down and chronic offenders away from Maryland waterways. The organization is asking the EPA to impose mandatory minimum penalties and to be more aggressive in making MDE accountable for pollution and violators.
