Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Funds Cancer Care Equipment

The Memorial Hospital Auxiliary’s 28th Annual Tree of Lights fundraiser met its goal to purchase equipment for the Requard Radiation Oncology Center of Shore Regional Cancer Center in Easton. Donations made to the auxiliary during the holiday season were used to fund a $5,800 quality assurance radiation monitor that calibrates the equipment used to deliver radiation therapy to patients.

The monitor is used by specially trained staff at the Requard Radiation Oncology Center to check the amount of radiation being generated from the machine that is used to treat cancer patients. The monitor also measures the shape and energy of the radiation beam that will penetrate the targeted tumor.

“By law we are required to take daily measurements that validate the performance of our two linear accelerators, the machines we use to deliver radiation treatments for cancer patients. Every morning, before we treat the first patient, we take a series of technically complex measurements to ensure that treatments are both safe and effective for each person who comes to our center,” says Phillip Sawyer, MS, lead medical physicist for the Requard Radiation Oncology Center. “Having this data helps us define even more precise dosage calculation and treatment delivery so that we can help ensure that the radiation received by our patients is the most effective dose possible.”

The new monitor also tracks the performance of the radiation machines and gives the physicists an early warning sign that service may be required.

“This monitor really helps us keep our linear accelerators in working order so we are less likely to have downtime and unnecessary appointment rescheduling for our patients,” says Brian Leutner, director of oncology services for Shore Health System. “We are grateful to the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for their continued generosity to the Cancer Center.”

Hospital Tree Lighting Kicks Off Auxiliary Fundraiser

On November 18, children from the Shore Health System Child Development Center helped light the Memorial Hospital holiday tree, kicking off the hospital auxiliary’s 27th Annual Tree of Lights fundraising campaign.

The Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has set a goal to raise $7,000 for equipment that will be used to make patients more comfortable during radiation therapy.

The community can support the Tree of Lights fundraiser by making a donation to purchase a light for the Memorial Hospital holiday tree. A one-season donation of $5 buys a red or gold light. The red light honors family members and friends, living or deceased. The gold light honors men and women serving in the military.

A $100 contribution to Tree of Lights purchases a white Life Light, which will be lit each year.

Purchasing an annual light or a Life Light is also a unique way to commemorate special occasions, to offer thanksgiving and to show appreciation. The name of each person recognized through the purchase of any light will be displayed on scrolls hung in the main lobby at Memorial Hospital throughout the holiday season.

Tree of Lights donation forms are available at the Memorial Hospital Information Desk, 219 S. Washington Street in Easton. The form can also be printed at www.shorehealth.org/volunteers.

Tree of Lights Benefits Cancer Program

On Thursday, November 18, the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will launch its 27th Annual Tree of Lights fundraising campaign. By purchasing a light for the Memorial Hospital holiday tree, donors have an opportunity to honor their friends and family members while raising money that benefits the Shore Regional Cancer Program.

The community is invited to the Tree of Lights tree lighting ceremony on Thursday, November 18 at 4:30 p.m. at the front lobby entrance to Memorial Hospital, 219 S. Washington Street in Easton. Festivities will include refreshments and entertainment. In keeping with tradition, the lighting of the tree in the front circle of the hospital will mark the beginning of Easton’s holiday season. The tree will stay illuminated until the first of the New Year.

This year, the Auxiliary’s Tree of Lights fundraiser will benefit patients who receive radiation therapy at Shore Regional Cancer Center’s Requard Radiation Oncology Center in Easton. The Auxiliary has set a goal to raise $7,000 that will be used to purchase a C-Qual™ Breastboard.

A breastboard, which is placed on the radiation table, can provide comfort by elevating the patient’s upper body if they are uncomfortable lying flat on their back for the 20-minute treatment. The board is used most often for patients being treated for breast cancer. The board may also be used for lung, cervical spine, head and neck treatment.

Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Fundraiser Benefits Pediatrics

On Tuesday, November 17, the Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital will launch its 26th Annual Tree of Lights fundraising campaign. By purchasing a light for the Memorial Hospital holiday tree, donors have an opportunity to honor their friends and family members while raising money that benefits programs and services of the hospital.

The community is invited to the Tree of Lights tree lighting ceremony on Tuesday, November 17 at 4:30 p.m. at the front lobby entrance to Memorial Hospital, 219 S. Washington Street in Easton. Festivities will include refreshments and entertainment. In keeping with tradition, the lighting of the tree in the front circle of the hospital will mark the beginning of Easton’s holiday season. The tree will stay illuminated until the first of the New Year.

This year, the Auxiliary’s Tree of Lights fundraiser will benefit the youngest children cared for in the hospital’s pediatrics unit. Funds raised will be used to purchase equipment which monitors heart and respiration rates of infants at risk for apnea, a pause in or absence of breathing that can lead to sudden infant death. Each monitor costs $3,500 and the pediatrics unit could use several of these devices to replace the existing monitoring system.

“The use of the apnea monitor in the hospital reassures parents because they know that their infant is being closely monitored and that medical professionals are there to respond to the alarm,” says Linda Yungbluth, clinical specialist for respiratory care at Shore Health System.

The community can support the Tree of Lights fundraiser by making a donation to purchase a light for the Memorial Hospital holiday tree. A one-season donation of $5 buys a red or gold light. The red light honors family members and friends, living or deceased. The gold light honors people serving in the military. A $100 contribution purchases a white Life Light, which will be lit each year.

“Purchasing an annual light or a Life Light is also a unique way to commemorate special occasions, to offer thanksgiving and to show appreciation,” says Rosalie Bryan, chair of Memorial Hospital Auxiliary’s Tree of Lights campaign. “The name of each person recognized through the purchase of any light will be displayed on scrolls hung in the main lobby at Memorial Hospital throughout the holiday season.”
