Talbot Humane Extends Hours, Needs Foster Homes

Beginning May 2, Talbot Humane’s adoption center on Ocean Gateway in Easton will be open seven days a week to accommodate the busy summer season. In addition to its regular Monday through Saturday hours, Talbot Humane will open on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. through Labor Day weekend.

The facility cares for up to two hundred animals at any given time. The extended hours provide greater opportunity for the public to meet and adopt pets that are in need of a loving home.

Executive Director Brian Metcalf acknowledges the burden the added hours will place on staff and volunteers. “We are severely stretched as is,” he said. “However, we must do everything possible to place as many pets into new homes as we can and control the overpopulation that faces us.”

Crowding and stress increase the risk of infectious diseases. “One of the best tools for disease prevention is to reduce the amount of time each animal spends in the shelter environment,” explained Metcalf.

By extending its hours of operation and continuing a new “people-friendly” adoption process, Metcalf hopes Talbot Humane will have higher adoption rates and reduced threat of disease.

Spring and summer are also the time when Talbot Humane experiences the greatest need for pet foster homes.  “I am pleading with ourTalbot County family to provide temporary homes for our animals,” said Metcalf.

“Foster families save lives,” he emphasized. “They allow us to care for a larger number of pets and keep them healthy.

“These little four-legged friends give so much and ask for so little. We really hope that people will find a place in their hearts to help our dedicated staff and compassionate volunteers in their life-saving mission.”
