Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience Bring Mardi Gras to the Avalon Theatre

Mardi Gras is arriving in Easton. More specifically, at the Avalon Theatre on Wednesday, February 9th. Seems as if the Avalon staff knew we’d all be tired of snow and ice by now…and ready for a seriously hot night of Cajun-inspired get-up-and-dance music by one of New Orleans’ favorite sons.

For more than two decades (including a recent Grammy win) Terrance Simien has been shattering the myths about what zydeco music is and is not. Leading his Zydeco Experience Band, Simien has become one of the most respected and internationally recognized touring and recording artists in roots music today. He has performed more than 5000 concerts, touring millions of miles and performing for millions of music fans worldwide.

In a nutshell, he’s Mr. Zydeco. The man has shared studio time and the stage with musicians crossing all genres, including Robert Palmer, Stevie Wonder, Los Lobos, Taj Mahal, Dr. John, The Meters, Paul Simon, and the Dave Matthews Band to name a few. He has been featured in dozens of films (including the hit The Big Easy) and his music has been heard on radio, NPR syndicated radio shows, and satellite radio – quite literally by millions worldwide.

Incorporating diverse music styles, Simien and his band create a hypnotic blend of Zydeco-roots-New Orleans funk-reggae-flavored-Afro-Caribbean-world music that forces young and old out of their seats and onto the dance floor. Stated simply, he has found a way to express himself as a relevant and evolving artist who remains reverent to his roots and musical legacy.

Making the show even more special is its tie to good will. The Avalon Foundation is partnering with Simien to present Creole For Kidz – a multicultural arts-in-education “informance” (informational performance) that has reached more than 250,000 K-12 students, parents and educators at schools, art centers and festivals around the globe – to a packed theatre full of kids grades 4-6 on Tuesday, February 8th. Part of the Avalon’s education outreach initiative, the nonprofit organization is partnering with Talbot County Schools in an effort to expose students to free performances in a theatric setting, helping to build the foundation for a life-long appreciation of art and music. This being said, many ticketholders will be happy to know that their attendance at the Wednesday night concert helps to directly fund outreach efforts such as Creole For Kidz.

Rolling Stone calls Simien “…a Zydeco Master: His voice yearning like Sam Cooke, he delivers soul worthy of Stax greats and shows crossover class.” Rest assured, those looking to put down the remote and move around a bit on the theatre’s open dance floor should be very happy with what this zydeco experience has in store.
