Wye Conservatory of Music Invites Public to Open House

The Wye Conservatory of Music is presenting a free afternoon of music, information, and refreshments on Saturday, February 12 between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. in the Old Wye Parish Hall at 14114 Old Wye Mills Rd. (Rt. 662). The Open House will introduce the talents and offerings of the Conservatory to the public.

Vocal music will be presented in an informal setting by the Wye Choral Scholars and Conservatory Director, Bonnie Forgacs, a New York opera diva and Curtis Institute of Music graduate now living in Denton. Ms. Forgacs and the Scholars will sing popular arias from several operas, plus songs by Handel, Aaron Copland, and Gilbert and Sullivan. Amy Morgan, Assistant Director of the Conservatory, will play works for the piano by Chopin, Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms.

Between the performances, Ms. Forgacs and Ms. Morgan will present information on the Conservatory’s various programs, ranging from individual instruction in voice, piano, clarinet, and handbells to programs for young people in the community in choral music and musical theater. The Open House will offer light food and refreshments by Richard Kahn Catering of Easton.

The Conservatory’s flagship Choral Scholars program, begun four years ago, selects an auditioned ensemble of talented middle and high school students from the area to receive multi-year professional training, with a monthly stipend, in diverse historical and cultural musical traditions. The Wye Operetta Workshop (WOW!), also in its fourth year, involves Eastern Shore students from grade 8 through college who, this coming summer, will perform Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance at the Avalon Theatre in Easton during the Plein Air Festival. WOW! is free to the participants, and its performances are free to the audiences.

The Wye Conservatory of Music was founded last year to carry on and expand music programs developed by Wye Parish in Queenstown and Wye Mills. The Conservatory also sponsors an annual concert series, in which the next event will be “Celebrating St. Patrick” on March 12.
